digital signature

Posted by Antoine Bréjuin at July 16. 2008

Hy,

If I stored several files with digital signature, do they still have their digital signature after rebuilding data?

Thanks a lot!

Antoine

Short answer: yes. The rebuilder rebuilds the data as it was originally stored. Since you signed the files BEFORE putting them on the dsNet, the signature itself is sliced and is part of the data. The accesser or the slicestor do not treat the data any differently if the data is encrypted or digitally signed.

In the next release (1.1), we are introducing digital signature and encryption codecs, which can be used to sign data sources (blocks). This means to put them as "<codec.." (and not "<slice-codec...") in the vault descriptor.

Even in the case where each block is signed using a vault-level datasource codec, the rebuilder will have enough information to recreate the data, because the rebuilder only uses other slices (slice codecs + slice data) to recreate slices, and any data-level codecs are not affected.
